The Complete Aftercare Guide for Hair Extensions

Investing in quality hair extensions is only half the battle. How you care for them afterwards determines how long they'll last and how beautiful they'll remain. Proper aftercare doesn't have to be complicated, but it does require consistency and the right approach.
Washing Your Extensions
Wait at least 48 hours after application before washing to allow adhesive bonds to fully set. When you do wash, use lukewarm water and a sulphate-free shampoo specifically designed for extensions. Sulphates strip moisture from hair and weaken bonds. Wash in a downward motion from roots to ends, never scrubbing or twisting. For permanent extensions, avoid washing the root area where bonds are located. Instead, focus on the mid-lengths and ends.
Conditioning and Treatment
Extensions are no longer receiving moisture from your scalp's natural oils, so they need extra conditioning. Use a hydrating conditioner after every wash, concentrating on the ends. Weekly deep conditioning treatments keep extensions soft and prevent tangling. Look for products containing keratin or argan oil for added nourishment. Leave-in conditioners are excellent for maintaining moisture between washes.
Drying and Styling
Gently squeeze water from extensions rather than wringing them out. Pat dry with a microfibre towel or t-shirt to prevent frizz. When blow-drying, use a heat protectant spray and keep the dryer on a medium setting. Always dry from roots to ends, and avoid concentrating heat on bonds if you have permanent extensions. When styling, use a heat protectant and keep temperatures moderate.
Brushing and Detangling
Invest in a soft bristle brush or extension-specific brush. Brush gently starting from the ends and working upwards, never roughly pulling through tangles. Brush before washing to remove loose hairs. Avoid brushing extensions whilst wet, as this is when they're most vulnerable to breakage. Be especially gentle with textured or curly extensions.
Sleeping and Daily Habits
Braid or loosely twist extensions before bed to prevent overnight tangling. Sleep on a silk pillowcase to reduce friction. Avoid sleeping with damp extensions as this causes matting. Keep extensions away from chlorine and saltwater, and always wear a swim cap if you must go in water. Minimise contact with heat sources and be careful with hairspray and other products that can build up.
Regular Maintenance
Schedule touch-ups as recommended by your stylist. For clip-in extensions, remove them daily and store properly. For permanent extensions, book maintenance appointments every 4-8 weeks depending on your hair growth. Regular maintenance keeps extensions looking fresh and prevents damage to your natural hair underneath.
With consistent care, your extensions will maintain their beauty and longevity, making your investment worthwhile.
